The Every Story(Teller) Matters – Human Libraries and Mutual Recognition (EStM-HLMR) project has proven that storytelling can be a powerful bridge between cultures. Coordinated by a consortium from Denmark, Spain, Portugal, Romania, Greece and Turkey, the initiative set out to promote inclusion and intercultural dialogue through the innovative Human Library methodology — a format where people become “books” and share their personal stories to challenge prejudice and foster empathy.

Over the past year, the project successfully organised 36 Human Library events, involving more than 500 readers and 50 Human Books. In parallel, it ran capacity-building and storytelling webinars for over 250 youth workers from across Europe, Africa and Asia, and hosted two international mobility programmes in Portugal and Romania for youth workers and young migrants. These combined actions created a rich ecosystem for learning, dialogue and intercultural understanding.

The impact evaluation reveals significant positive change. Before joining the activities, most participants had never attended a Human Library and lacked confidence to confront stereotypes or share their own experiences. After the project, data showed a clear transformation: 63.9% of young adults reported gaining “new and different perspectives,” 54.8% of teenagers said they achieved a “greater understanding of social issues,” and many participants expressed stronger motivation to promote inclusion within their communities. The project thus succeeded in moving participants from passive agreement with inclusive values to active engagement and advocacy.

Satisfaction with the methodology was exceptionally high. Nearly three-quarters of webinar participants rated the sessions as excellent, praising the emotional power of real stories and the safe, respectful atmosphere of the events. Even when some logistical challenges appeared during one mobility activity, the overall feedback confirmed that the Human Library model offers a unique and transformative learning experience that builds empathy, challenges prejudice and encourages human connection.

Ultimately, the Every Story(Teller) Matters project demonstrated that meaningful dialogue is not created through lectures or campaigns, but through listening to real people with real stories. By turning conversation into a tool for inclusion, it has empowered hundreds of young people and youth workers to see diversity not as a barrier, but as a shared human strength — one story at a time.
